Joey’s Place is Opening Soon!

Joey’s Place is due to open soon. This newly established licensed, 28-bed residence provides a sober, and supportive living environment for individuals recovering from a substance use disorder.
Joey’s Place is located in the same building as Pathway to Care and Recovery at 326 Third Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 right in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh. The residence offers convenient access to public transportation, including nearby bus lines and subway stations.
Designed with compassion and purpose, Joey’s Place provides up to five months of housing in a structured, supportive environment where individuals can focus on healing, rebuilding their lives, and strengthening their recovery journey. As an essential part of Renewal’s continuum of care, Joey’s Place staff will work closely with each resident as they take meaningful steps toward lasting recovery, stability, and independence.
Joey’s Place offers modern, double occupancy living spaces for up to 28 adult men, ages 18 and older. Residents are welcomed into a supportive environment where everyone plays an active role in caring for the house. Through shared responsibilities, cooperation, and weekly house meetings, residents build connection, accountability, and a sense of belonging as they move forward in their recovery. The program also provides three meals daily — breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
The Story Behind Joey’s Place
Joey’s Place carries a name that means something deeply personal to the Renewal, Inc. community.
Joey was part of the Renewal team. For several years, he worked alongside staff dedicated to helping others find stability, healing, and hope in their recovery journey. Joey also carried the burden of his own struggle with substance use disorder — a journey that so many individuals and families know all too well.
After Joey passed away from an overdose, his story continued to shape Renewal’s mission in powerful ways. Joey was our colleague, and so much more. He was a son, a friend, and someone whose lived experience helped shape how Renewal understands and responds to addiction and recovery.
His life and lived experience helped inspire Pathway to Care and Recovery, a Renewal program that is a 24/7/365 crisis center and the “front door” to get help with substance abuse recovery services. Staff members, who have lived experience, are ready to help anytime — no appointment, referral or insurance needed.
Today, Joey’s Place stands as a tribute to Joey’s life and the countless others walking a similar path. A plaque in his memory reminds staff, residents, and visitors that behind every program and every service is a person whose story matters.
Joey’s Place carries that spirit forward.
It is more than a name of a place. It is a reminder that behind every program is a person, behind every struggle is a story, and behind every step is a pathway toward recovery, independence and hope.
Eligibility & Program Requirements
Individuals entering Joey’s Place must be residents of Allegheny County, medically stable, without risk of withdrawal and no need for withdrawal management services. This program serves individuals diagnosed with a substance use disorder who are transitioning from inpatient drug and alcohol treatment, participating in an outpatient level of care, or reentering the community following hospitalization, county jail, or prison, and who are ready for a structured, supportive recovery living environment.
All residents must have Allegheny County–based Medicaid insurance and actively engage in community support meetings and recovery planning with their care management team. Residents are also required to complete a level-of-care assessment with a licensed drug and alcohol provider and comply with all treatment recommendations.
Individuals prescribed mental health medications or medications that support recovery from substance use disorder are eligible for residency, provided they have a valid prescription in their name and agree to follow all house medication policies and procedures.
